How to use the Shoebox Scanning app

Important: if you used the app last year, please delete and reinstall it, or your account may not work

Why scan the gifts?

It makes it really easy to see which koha haven’t been delivered as the drop-off window closes, that way we know how many gifts we need to organise back-ups for. We can view what’s missing and let you know.

The sooner we scan, the better, so we can email reminders to the gifters who haven’t delivered theirs throughout the drop-off month of November. Rather than finding out 50 are missing at the start of December and try to find replacements for all of them in a couple of weeks.

Secondly, a big part of why donors continue to give and tell their friends and whānau about the project, is the feedback loop of knowing their gift has got to where they expect it to and getting an acknowledgement of this. When their koha has been scanned, they’ll get an email saying thank you.

When gifts arrive, we scan the barcode on the label. This marks that koha as delivered.

HELP! Its not working!

  • Some schools have reported their wifi blocks the app. If this happens, try turning wifi off and using 3/4G instead.

  • Like all barcodes, the label needs to be cleanish for the bars to be read by the scanner, if it’s not picking up, try wiping the barcode so it's clean/clear and all bars are visible.

  • If a barcode still doesn’t scan, use the manual entry screen, making sure you type only the numbers on the label.

  • If you have already scanned a barcode, it won’t show any details when you try and scan it again. If you’re unsure, clear your history in the app by clicking View History and then Clear History. Note: this doesn’t un-scan them, they’ll still be showing as delivered.

  • If the demo barcode on the link above doesn’t scan, give it a couple of minutes and try again, someone else might have just clicked save and it needs a minute to reset.

  • Don’t worry if it says ‘delivered’ to another school. This is just a bug on the app, it doesn’t matter where it says it was delivered :)
