Module objectives overview

Our Effective Communication & Kōrero module aims to equip students with comprehensive communication skills that are pivotal to personal and professional success. The module objectives are organised around four main pou (pillars):

1. Understanding the Power of Effective Communication: The course begins with an exploration of the concept and significance of effective communication, using the pōwhiri experience to highlight the importance of good communication in Māori culture. Students will learn the key principles and best practices of effective communication, with a focus on the anatomy of good kōrero - model by Pera Barrett.

2. Communicating Effectively in Email: As a crucial medium in modern communication, the course teaches students the best practices for email communication, including etiquette, subject lines, and formatting. Students will have opportunities to apply these skills in practice scenarios and receive feedback from their peers.

3. Communicating Effectively in Social Media: Recognising the increasing role of social media in communication, students will learn how to craft engaging social media posts with appropriate tone, language, and image selection. They will put this knowledge into practice by creating social media posts for given scenarios.

4. Utilising Tools for Effective Communication: The course introduces students to digital tools that can enhance their communication, such as Grammerly and email templates in Gmail. It also covers how to create a comprehensive communication plan and FAQs page based on a previously created User Journey Map, and how to use a no-code website to host key information, minimising the need for individual communication.

Overall, the course provides a holistic approach to effective communication, with a strong focus on practical application and culturally responsive practices. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with a versatile set of communication skills that can be applied in diverse personal and professional contexts.
