The Power of Data
Module objectives overview
The Power of Data module empowers students to understand and harness the potential of data in personal and professional contexts, with a special focus on using data respectfully, and effectively.
Understanding the Power of Data: The course starts by introducing students to the concept of effective data use and its significance. It uses the experience of a pōwhiri to underline the historical importance of good data use in Māori culture. Through online tutorials, students will learn the principles and best practices of good data analysis. They will also get a chance to research and present on specific data use challenges.
Using Tools to Capture Data: The module progresses to highlight the importance of using suitable tools for data capture, providing students with tutorials on how to effectively use various tools, including survey tools and data tracking software. Students will have the opportunity to practice capturing data using these tools.
Organising Data: This section delves into the importance of effectively organising data. Tutorials will cover best practices in structuring and categorising data, while maintaining data integrity. Students will get to put this into practice with a provided dataset.
Visualising Data: The course then introduces data visualisation, teaching students how to use tools such as Airtable to display data in charts, tables, and views. Students will have hands-on practice in visualising a given dataset.
